Which Mexican rolled tortilla chip brand was first sold in Mexico in 1999?

The story behind the answer

Takis is the Mexican brand of rolled tortilla chips first sold in Mexico in 1999.

The brand is produced by Barcel, a snack subsidiary of Grupo Bimbo. Its chips are made in a distinctive tightly rolled form and sold in strongly seasoned flavours, especially the chili-lime Fuego variety. The unusual shape and intense seasoning helped distinguish Takis from more conventional flat tortilla chips.

The brand was originally launched in Mexico as “Taquis” in 1999. Barcel changed the spelling to “Takis” in 2004, a detail that can make older references or packaging history confusing. The snack then expanded internationally, reaching the United States in 2001 and Canada in 2015.

Doritos, Tostitos and Fritos are all familiar snack brands, but they are not the answer. Doritos are generally triangular tortilla chips, Tostitos is associated with tortilla chips and dips, and Fritos are corn chips. Takis’ defining clue here is the rolled tortilla-chip shape combined with its Mexican origin.
