Which Metroid game won Best Action/Adventure Game at The Game Awards 2021?

The story behind the answer

Metroid Dread won Best Action/Adventure Game at The Game Awards 2021.

The award recognized the Nintendo Switch game’s combination of side-scrolling exploration, tense stealth sequences, demanding combat, and ability-based progression. Developed by MercurySteam and Nintendo EPD, Dread continues Samus Aran’s story after Metroid Fusion and sends her to the planet ZDR.

The ceremony took place on December 9, 2021. Metroid Dread was nominated in two major categories: Game of the Year and Best Action/Adventure Game. It won the latter, while It Takes Two received the ceremony’s Game of the Year award.

The result is sometimes confused with later Metroid releases or with the franchise’s Best Action/Adventure recognition at other awards shows. Metroid Prime 4 was not a released competitor in 2021, Metroid: Samus Returns came out in 2017, and Metroid Prime Remastered was released in 2023. Dread launched on October 8, 2021, and became the best-selling game in the Metroid series.
