Which Mercury model launched in 1967 as a higher-trim alternative to the Mustang?
Answer
Mercury Cougar
Answer
Mercury Cougar
The Mercury Cougar launched in 1967 as a higher-trim alternative to the Ford Mustang. It shared the Mustang’s basic architecture but added more equipment, comfort, and visual distinction for buyers willing to pay more.
Mercury positioned the Cougar between the Mustang and the larger Ford Thunderbird. Its first generation used a longer wheelbase than the Mustang and was sold initially as a two-door hardtop with V8 power. The upscale XR-7 trim added features such as a wood-trim-style dashboard, full instrumentation, and additional luxury appointments.
The Cougar was not simply a rebadged Mustang. Mercury gave it unique bodywork, hidden headlamps, sequential rear turn signals, and a distinctive grille. The model became a successful part of the Lincoln-Mercury lineup, earning the 1967 Motor Trend Car of the Year award. The Cyclone, Comet, and Capri were separate Mercury nameplates, not the Mustang’s direct 1967 counterpart.
