Al Mualim leads the Assassin Brotherhood in the original Assassin's Creed.
He is the mentor and master of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, the game's historical protagonist. Al Mualim is based at the mountain fortress of Masyaf, which serves as the Brotherhood's principal headquarters during the game's story.
After Altaïr breaks the Brotherhood's code during a failed mission, Al Mualim strips him of his rank and weapons. He then assigns Altaïr a series of assassination targets across the Holy Land. These missions are presented as both punishment and a path toward restoring Altaïr's status.
Al Mualim's role makes him an important authority figure, but the story later reveals that his relationship with the Assassin ideals is more complicated than it first appears. The name is sometimes rendered as Al Mualim or Al-Mualim in different references.
