Which medieval author wrote The Divine Comedy, a major influence on C.S. Lewis?

The story behind the answer

Dante Alighieri wrote The Divine Comedy, a major medieval influence on C.S. Lewis.

Lewis was deeply interested in medieval literature and Christian imagination. Dante's poem follows a journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, and its architecture of moral and spiritual reality helped shape the kind of imaginative reading Lewis valued. Lewis's scholarly work on medieval and Renaissance literature reflects this interest.

Dante is sometimes confused with Virgil because Virgil guides the traveler through much of the poem. Virgil, however, is a character and guide, not the author. Beatrice later guides the pilgrim through Paradise. The poem's three sections are Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso, and the complete work is generally dated to the early fourteenth century.
