“I’m Lovin’ It” was launched as a McDonald’s global slogan in 2003 after creative development involving the German agency Heye & Partner. The campaign introduced a short, conversational phrase intended to unify advertising across many countries.
The slogan was paired with a distinctive five-note musical motif and became one of the longest-running international taglines in McDonald’s history. Advertising versions were adapted into different languages, but the English wording and musical identity remained central to the campaign.
People sometimes confuse the slogan with earlier McDonald’s lines such as “You Deserve a Break Today,” which was introduced in 1971, or “We Love to See You Smile,” used in the 1990s. Those phrases belong to earlier branding eras.
The 2003 campaign also helped shift McDonald’s communication toward contemporary pop culture and a more informal first-person voice.
