Ronald McDonald was introduced as McDonald’s advertising character in 1963, becoming the chain’s best-known human-like mascot. The first widely recognized television portrayal was created for the Washington, D.C., market by entertainer Willard Scott, who appeared in a costume built from McDonald’s food imagery.
Ronald’s design evolved over time. Early versions used a cup-like hat, a tray, and other exaggerated restaurant elements, while later versions adopted the familiar red-haired clown appearance. National advertising made him the central figure of McDonaldland, a fantasy setting populated by additional characters.
Ronald McDonald is sometimes confused with the Hamburglar or Mayor McCheese, who were introduced as separate McDonaldland personalities. Unlike those characters, Ronald served as the primary spokesperson and appeared in broad family-oriented campaigns.
Although the company reduced his public advertising presence in the 2010s, Ronald remains an important part of McDonald’s historical brand identity.
