Which McDonald’s restaurant is preserved as the oldest surviving location in the company’s original building?

The story behind the answer

The oldest surviving McDonald’s location in its original building is in Downey, California.

The restaurant opened in 1953 and was operated by franchisees Roger and June Williams. Its building retains the distinctive mid-century design associated with early McDonald’s, including the roadside Golden Arches. Because it remained in operation while many earlier restaurants were demolished or remodeled, it became a valuable physical record of the company’s branding history.

The Downey location is often confused with the first McDonald’s restaurant in San Bernardino, which was opened by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald in 1940. San Bernardino is the origin site of the business, but the original building no longer serves as the ordinary surviving restaurant in the same way.

Phoenix is another common mix-up because the 1953 Phoenix location is credited with pioneering the arches in restaurant architecture. Downey’s distinction is specifically its survival as the oldest operating restaurant in its original building.
