Downey McDonald’s is the world’s oldest surviving McDonald’s restaurant site.
The restaurant in Downey, California, opened in 1953 and retains the early drive-in design associated with McDonald’s expansion after the McDonald brothers’ original San Bernardino operation. Its prominent yellow arches make it an important surviving landmark in the history of the company’s visual identity.
The site is especially significant because it preserves an early architectural form in which the arches functioned as part of the building and roadside sign. That design helped establish the imagery later condensed into the corporate Golden Arches logo.
The designation can cause confusion because the original McDonald brothers’ restaurant stood in San Bernardino, and the oldest continuously operating restaurant has sometimes been discussed separately from the oldest surviving site. The Downey location is the recognized surviving 1953 McDonald’s restaurant site.
