The McRib was launched by McDonald’s in 1981.
Its name follows McDonald’s highly recognizable “Mc” product-branding pattern. The sandwich was developed as a boneless pork product shaped to resemble a rack of ribs, then served with barbecue sauce, onions and pickles on a bun. The branding suggested ribs while fitting the operational needs of a quick-service restaurant.
The McRib was not always continuously available. McDonald’s has repeatedly offered it as a limited-time or promotional item, creating anticipation around its returns. That intermittent availability became part of the product’s public identity and marketing appeal.
The McRib is distinct from Chicken McNuggets and McChicken, which use different product formats and names. Its importance in branding history comes from the way McDonald’s combined a familiar corporate prefix with a product name that communicated both the main ingredient and the sandwich’s barbecue style.
