Speedee was the McDonald’s mascot used before Ronald McDonald became the chain’s best-known spokesman.
Speedee was a chef-like character associated with the original “Speedee Service System” introduced by McDonald’s founders Richard and Maurice McDonald. His name emphasized the brothers’ focus on producing hamburgers quickly and consistently.
The character appeared in early McDonald’s signs, packaging, and promotional material. This early branding connected the mascot directly to the restaurant’s operational promise: fast service. It predates the later fantasy world of McDonaldland and its many characters.
Ronald McDonald eventually became the more prominent public face of the company in the 1960s. Because both characters were used in McDonald’s advertising, Speedee is sometimes overlooked, but he represents the chain’s earliest mascot-based identity.
