Which McDonald’s mascot was the company’s first, appearing in 1948?

The story behind the answer

Speedee was McDonald’s first mascot, appearing in 1948. The character was a chef-like figure with a hamburger-shaped head and represented the McDonald brothers’ Speedee Service System.

Richard and Maurice McDonald introduced that service system when they reorganized their San Bernardino restaurant around fast, standardized production. Speedee’s name reinforced the brand’s emphasis on speed, even though later McDonald’s advertising shifted attention to other characters.

Speedee is often confused with Ronald McDonald because Ronald became the company’s best-known mascot. Speedee, however, belongs to the earlier branding era, before the modern McDonaldland character lineup. McDonald’s eventually retired the character as its public identity developed around the Golden Arches and newer advertising figures.
