Speedee was the McDonald’s mascot replaced by Ronald McDonald in the 1960s.
Speedee had represented the company since 1948, when McDonald’s branding emphasized the Speedee Service System developed by the McDonald brothers. The character’s chef appearance and name communicated quick preparation and efficient service.
As McDonald’s expanded, its advertising increasingly focused on families and children. Ronald McDonald offered a more distinctive personality for television commercials and public appearances, so he gradually displaced Speedee as the chain’s best-known mascot.
The change did not erase Speedee from the company’s early history. Instead, it marked a transition in branding: from a symbol of operational speed to a character-centered identity built around entertainment and family appeal. The Hamburglar and Grimace appeared later as part of the McDonaldland world.
