McDonald’s introduced the Happy Meal in the United States in 1979.
The children’s meal combined a small serving of food with a toy and was designed as a distinct branded experience for families. Its first national U.S. offering included a hamburger or cheeseburger, fries, a soft drink, and a toy, although the contents and packaging have changed repeatedly.
The Happy Meal strengthened McDonald’s family-oriented branding by giving children a recognizable product name, colorful packaging, and collectible entertainment tie-ins. Toys linked to films, television programs, and McDonald’s characters later became an important part of the promotion’s identity.
The Happy Meal is sometimes confused with a general value meal or with regional children’s offerings that appeared before or after it. Its defining feature is not simply a smaller portion, but the combination of a child-focused package and a toy or comparable promotional item.
