Jim Schindler created the first version of McDonald’s combined Golden Arches logo.
The original arches were separate architectural elements on opposite sides of McDonald’s buildings. Schindler combined their forms into a single stylized “M,” converting the restaurant’s physical roadside design into a recognizable graphic symbol.
This development marked an important shift in McDonald’s branding. Customers no longer needed to see the entire building to recognize the company; the emblem could appear on signs, packaging, advertisements, and other materials.
The combined arches should not be attributed to Stanley Clark Meston, whose earlier work established the building design. The symbol also should not be confused with the later refinements made to McDonald’s wordmarks and logo presentation. The central idea was the joining of two architectural arches.
