McDonald’s originally presented Grimace as Evil Grimace.
When Grimace debuted in 1971, the character was portrayed as a villain who stole milkshakes. This early version had a different role from the gentle, child-friendly purple companion familiar from later McDonald’s advertising. The company eventually removed the “Evil” characterization and made Grimace a friendly member of the McDonaldland cast.
The change is a common source of confusion because modern descriptions of Grimace usually omit the character’s original behavior. The Hamburglar remained the best-known food thief in the campaign, but Grimace’s first storyline also involved stealing a menu item. Later advertising emphasized friendship, playfulness, and a simpler visual design.
Grimace’s evolution illustrates how McDonald’s refined its branding for children and families. Rather than keeping a frightening or mischievous figure at the center of the campaign, the company transformed him into a broadly appealing mascot. The purple character then became one of the brand’s most durable fictional figures.
