The character was part of McDonaldland, McDonald’s fictional advertising setting. Early versions wore a striped outfit and cape and were portrayed as a mischievous figure whose repeated goal was to take hamburgers. His name made the character’s connection to the menu immediately clear.
The Hamburglar’s appearance changed substantially over time. The original version looked more like an elderly troublemaker, while later redesigns made him appear younger and more cartoon-like. These changes sometimes cause people to remember different versions as separate characters.
The Hamburglar was not the same character as Officer Big Mac, who was associated with law enforcement in McDonaldland. Both belonged to the same advertising universe, but their roles were different.
