McDonald’s introduced the first Ronald McDonald House in 1974.
The first house opened in Philadelphia to provide families with a place to stay while their seriously ill children received treatment at nearby hospitals. Its creation grew from cooperation among Philadelphia Eagles players, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, local medical supporters, and McDonald’s involvement.
The project became a major example of branding connected with a charitable organization. The Ronald McDonald House name used the company’s famous mascot, but the house’s purpose was practical: reducing the financial and emotional burden on families who had to travel for pediatric medical care.
This date is distinct from the 1970s expansion of McDonaldland advertising. The Ronald McDonald House charity network developed alongside, but was not the same thing as, the fictional world used in commercials.
