The Hamburglar was introduced in 1971 as a McDonald’s advertising character who tried to steal hamburgers.
His early appearance was more sinister and elaborate than the later version most people remember. The character was eventually redesigned as a smaller, childlike figure wearing a striped outfit, cape, gloves, and a wide-brimmed hat. His repeated attempts to take hamburgers became a comic advertising routine rather than a serious threat.
The Hamburglar is sometimes confused with Captain Crook, another McDonaldland character whose theme involved Filet-O-Fish sandwiches. The two characters shared the same fictional advertising world but had different food-related identities.
The Hamburglar’s name made the product connection immediate and memorable. He helped McDonald’s turn menu items into characters and stories, strengthening the chain’s child-oriented branding during the period when McDonaldland became a major part of its advertising.
