Grimace was depicted as a purple, friendly creature in McDonald’s advertising.
The character became part of the McDonaldland cast and was designed as a companion to Ronald McDonald. Grimace’s simple shape, purple color, and cheerful personality made him especially easy for children to recognize in television commercials, restaurant displays, and merchandise.
Earlier advertising portrayed Grimace differently, including as a character connected with milkshake theft. McDonald’s later shifted him toward the gentler, friendly personality that became his best-known public image.
Grimace is sometimes confused with Birdie, the yellow character associated with breakfast, or Captain Crook, who was linked with Filet-O-Fish imagery. These characters shared the McDonaldland setting but had distinct designs and roles.
