Mac Tonight was the McDonald’s character created for a 1986 campaign promoting late-night dining.
The character was depicted as a person wearing a crescent-moon-shaped head and dark sunglasses. McDonald’s used Mac Tonight in advertisements aimed at encouraging customers to visit restaurants during evening hours, extending the brand’s appeal beyond traditional daytime meals.
The campaign used a rewritten version of the song “Mack the Knife,” performed in a style associated with lounge music. That musical presentation helped Mac Tonight stand apart from McDonaldland’s more child-oriented characters and gave the campaign a distinctly nighttime identity.
Mac Tonight is sometimes mistaken for a permanent member of the classic McDonaldland cast. In fact, he was primarily associated with the late-night advertising campaign that began in 1986 and was not the same character as Ronald McDonald, the brand’s best-known mascot.
