Captain Crook was the McDonaldland character created as a pirate by the advertising agency Needham, Harper & Steers.
Captain Crook belonged to the group of colorful characters used in McDonald's fantasy advertising during the 1970s. His pirate identity connected him with Filet-O-Fish promotions, while his exaggerated costume and speech made him easy for children to recognize.
The character is often confused with the Hamburglar because both were associated with playful food theft in McDonaldland advertising. Captain Crook, however, was specifically the pirate figure; the Hamburglar was the character associated with stealing hamburgers.
McDonald's gradually reduced its use of the classic McDonaldland cast as its advertising strategy changed. Even so, Captain Crook remains an example of how the company assigned distinct personalities and product associations to individual characters within one coherent fictional brand world.
