The Hamburglar was created as a hamburger thief in McDonaldland advertising.
He was one of McDonald’s recurring fictional characters and was defined by his attempts to steal hamburgers. His name, striped clothing, cape, and mischievous behavior made the hamburger theme explicit and gave the campaign a comic antagonist.
The character’s design changed over time. Early versions looked more like a small, older villain, while later advertising presented a shorter, younger-looking figure. The redesign helped fit the character more comfortably into McDonald’s family-oriented world.
The Hamburglar is often mixed up with Grimace because both belonged to McDonaldland. Their roles were different: the Hamburglar focused on hamburgers, while the earliest Grimace was associated with milkshakes before becoming a friendly mascot.
