Grimace was the purple, oversized McDonald’s character introduced in 1971 and later known simply by that name.
The character originally appeared with a more complicated identity and multiple sets of arms, but McDonald’s later simplified the design into the large, friendly purple figure widely recognized today. Grimace became part of the McDonaldland cast alongside Ronald McDonald and other recurring characters.
His design helped McDonald’s create a visual character that was easy to recognize in commercials, packaging, restaurant decorations, and promotional products. Unlike a human spokesperson, Grimace functioned as a highly distinctive brand shape and color.
Grimace is sometimes confused with Uncle O’Grimacey, a separate character associated with the Shamrock Shake. Uncle O’Grimacey was presented as Grimace’s relative, while Grimace himself became the enduring purple McDonaldland figure.
