Captain Crook promoted McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish sandwich in early advertising.
Captain Crook was a pirate-themed McDonaldland character associated with the Filet-O-Fish. His costume and nautical personality gave McDonald’s a way to make a fish sandwich visually distinct from its hamburger-focused products. The character appeared in advertising alongside Ronald McDonald and other fictional figures.
The use of a pirate character reflected a broader branding strategy: individual menu items could be given their own memorable associations within the larger McDonaldland world. Captain Crook’s role was narrower than Ronald McDonald’s, but he helped children recognize and remember the fish product.
Captain Crook is commonly confused with the Hamburglar because both were mischievous characters. Their product associations were different. The Hamburglar was linked to hamburgers, while Captain Crook’s defining association was the Filet-O-Fish. McDonald’s later reduced its use of many McDonaldland characters as advertising styles changed.
