Mac Tonight promoted McDonald's evening dining with the song “Mack the Knife.”
Mac Tonight was introduced in a 1986 McDonald's advertising campaign. The character wore sunglasses and had a crescent-moon head, visually signaling nighttime. Commercials used a revised version of “Mack the Knife,” a song closely associated with Bobby Darin's 1959 hit recording, to encourage customers to visit McDonald's after dark.
The campaign was designed to address a specific branding challenge: McDonald's was strongly associated with daytime meals, especially lunch. Mac Tonight gave the company a memorable way to promote dinner and late-evening visits while maintaining the restaurant's playful advertising style.
Mac Tonight is sometimes confused with McDonaldland characters such as Ronald McDonald or Birdie the Early Bird. Unlike those long-running characters, Mac Tonight was primarily a campaign mascot tied to an evening marketing message and a recognizable musical theme.
