Ronald McDonald first appeared on television in 1963 as McDonald’s principal mascot.
The character was created to give McDonald’s a distinctive family-friendly presence in television advertising. Early appearances presented Ronald as a clown associated with the restaurant and helped establish the imaginative character-based branding that later developed into the McDonaldland advertising world.
Ronald McDonald is often confused with Speedee, the earlier hamburger-headed mascot associated with McDonald’s Speedee Service System. The Hamburglar and Mayor McCheese were also later McDonaldland characters, but neither was the chain’s principal mascot in the early 1960s.
Ronald’s design and role changed over time, including changes to his costume and advertising presentation. Even so, his introduction marked a major transition from McDonald’s early service-oriented identity toward a more character-driven family brand.
