Mac Tonight debuted in 1986 as the character for McDonald’s Mac Tonight campaign.
The character was portrayed as a singing, piano-playing figure with a crescent-moon head. The campaign promoted McDonald’s evening dining and used a version of the song “Mack the Knife,” giving the advertisements a strong musical identity.
Mac Tonight is sometimes confused with McDonaldland characters because he appeared in McDonald’s advertising, but he was created for a separate campaign rather than the continuing fictional town. His moon-shaped head also makes him visually distinct from the Hamburglar, Grimace, and other long-running mascots.
The campaign became one of McDonald’s most memorable examples of character-led branding. It linked a particular time of day with a memorable visual design and musical arrangement.
