Which McDonald’s advertising character was known as Mac Tonight?

The story behind the answer

Mac Tonight was a crescent-moon-headed singer created for McDonald’s advertising.

The character debuted in 1986 during a campaign designed to promote McDonald’s as an evening dining destination. Mac Tonight wore sunglasses and sang a rewritten version of “Mack the Knife,” using the familiar melody to create a distinctive nighttime identity for the restaurant chain.

The campaign was especially associated with the phrase “It’s Mac Tonight!” and with television commercials featuring a large crescent moon as the character’s head. The unusual design made Mac Tonight visually different from McDonald’s established clown and McDonaldland characters.

Mac Tonight is sometimes confused with a permanent McDonald’s mascot. Unlike Ronald McDonald, Mac Tonight was primarily a campaign character associated with a particular period of advertising. The campaign was later discontinued, although the character remains one of the better-known examples of McDonald’s themed branding from the 1980s.
