Mac Tonight was the McDonald’s advertising character featured in the 1980s campaign built around the song “Mac Tonight.”
The character appeared as a performer with a crescent-moon head, sunglasses, and a tuxedo. The campaign promoted evening dining at McDonald’s and used a rewritten version of “Mack the Knife,” changing the lyric focus to “Mac Tonight.”
McDonald’s introduced the campaign in 1986. Mac Tonight’s visual identity was markedly different from the company’s McDonaldland characters: instead of a food-shaped or human-like mascot, he was presented as a sophisticated nighttime entertainer. That contrast helped the campaign communicate a specific daypart message.
Mac Tonight is sometimes confused with the Hamburglar or other long-running McDonaldland figures because all appeared in McDonald’s advertising. He was a separate character created for a particular campaign, and his best-known association is with promoting dinner and late-evening visits during the 1980s.
