Mac Tonight promoted McDonald's nighttime business.
McDonald's introduced Mac Tonight in 1986 as a distinctive advertising figure for evening dining. His crescent-moon head, sunglasses, suit, and lounge-singer presentation made him immediately different from the company's colorful children-focused mascots. The character's name also made the campaign's time-of-day message explicit.
The commercials used a version of “Mack the Knife,” giving Mac Tonight a musical identity as well as a visual one. This helped McDonald's associate the restaurant with dinner and late-day visits, rather than limiting its image to lunch or fast service.
Mac Tonight is often remembered as a general McDonald's mascot, but his original branding role was narrower. Birdie represented breakfast, while Mac Tonight represented evening dining. Ronald McDonald remained the broader corporate mascot across many campaigns.
