McDonald’s introduced Mac Tonight in 1986 as a crescent-moon character wearing sunglasses. He promoted the chain’s evening business and became one of McDonald’s most distinctive advertising figures.
Mac Tonight’s commercials used a rewritten version of the song “Mack the Knife,” with lyrics encouraging customers to visit McDonald’s at night. The campaign gave the character a smooth, lounge-singer style that differed from the younger, more cartoon-focused McDonald’s characters.
The character is sometimes confused with McDonald’s long-running mascots, such as Ronald McDonald or the Hamburglar. Unlike those characters, Mac Tonight was created specifically for a nighttime advertising campaign rather than McDonald’s fictional character world.
Mac Tonight is also separate from the later use of the company’s “I’m Lovin’ It” slogan. His campaign is remembered primarily for its crescent-moon design, sunglasses, and musical presentation.
