The Hamburglar was introduced in 1971 as a mischievous thief of McDonald’s hamburgers.
He was one of the fictional characters created for McDonald’s McDonaldland advertising world. His role was simple and memorable: he tried to steal hamburgers, especially from Ronald McDonald. The character gave commercials a recurring conflict while keeping the tone playful and family-friendly.
The Hamburglar appeared alongside Ronald McDonald, Mayor McCheese, Grimace, and other characters. Early versions of the character looked different from the later, smaller design that became widely familiar. Over time, the Hamburglar’s costume and behavior were revised as McDonald’s updated its advertising style.
The character should not be confused with Speedee, who represented the company’s early fast-service system. Nor is the Hamburglar the same as Mayor McCheese, whose oversized cheeseburger head made him a separate McDonaldland figure. These characters were part of a branded fictional world rather than real employees or restaurant founders.
