Which mascot appeared in McDonald’s branding before Ronald McDonald: Speedee or another character?

The story behind the answer

Speedee was the McDonald’s mascot used before Ronald McDonald became the chain’s best-known advertising character.

Speedee was a small chef character associated with the original “Speedee Service System” branding. The name connected McDonald’s with quick food preparation, an important selling point when Richard and Maurice McDonald redesigned their restaurant operation in San Bernardino, California.

The brothers opened their first restaurant in 1940, but the Speedee identity became especially associated with their streamlined service concept in the late 1940s. It represented speed and efficiency rather than the fantasy world later built around Ronald McDonald and the other McDonaldland characters.

A common mix-up is to call Ronald McDonald the company’s first mascot. Ronald became McDonald’s major national advertising mascot in 1963, while Speedee belonged to the earlier visual identity. The later character lineup also included Grimace, the Hamburglar, and Mayor McCheese.
