Namor is the Marvel character who rules the underwater city of Atlantis. Also known as the Sub-Mariner, Namor is one of Marvel’s earliest superheroes and first appeared in 1939, before many familiar Marvel icons.
Namor is the son of the human sea captain Leonard McKenzie and Fen, an Atlantean princess. That mixed heritage gives him unusual abilities, including superhuman strength, underwater breathing, great speed, and flight through the small wings on his ankles. He is often portrayed as a proud, temperamental defender of Atlantis rather than a straightforward hero or villain.
A common mix-up is Aquaman, who is DC Comics’ king of Atlantis. Namor belongs to Marvel. Another distinction applies to the Marvel Cinematic Universe: in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Namor rules Talokan, an underwater civilization inspired by Mesoamerican mythology, rather than comic-book Atlantis. In Marvel Comics, however, Atlantis is Namor’s kingdom.
