Audi won the WRC manufacturers’ titles in 1982 and 1984.
Audi’s first manufacturers’ championship came in 1982, the opening season of the Group B era. Its four-wheel-drive Quattro gave Audi a major technological advantage as all-wheel drive moved from an experimental idea to the defining force in top-level rallying.
Audi won again in 1984, when Stig Blomqvist took the drivers’ title and Hannu Mikkola finished second in the championship. The team’s strong driver line-up and Quattro performance delivered Audi’s second manufacturers’ crown.
The years can be confusing because Lancia won the manufacturers’ title in 1983 between Audi’s victories. Audi also won the 1982 title even though Opel driver Walter Röhrl claimed that season’s drivers’ championship, showing that the two championships were awarded separately.
