Porsche won seven consecutive overall victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 1981 through 1987.
The run began with the Porsche 936 in 1981, driven by Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell. Porsche then dominated with the Group C Porsche 956, which won from 1982 through 1985, before the related Porsche 962 continued the streak in 1986 and 1987. The sequence covered seven editions of the race without interruption.
This period is sometimes confused with Audi’s later Le Mans dominance, which began in 2000, or Ferrari’s earlier successes. Porsche’s streak was built not only on speed but also on efficient turbocharged engines, strong aerodynamics and exceptional durability—essential qualities in a race where mechanical survival matters as much as outright pace.
