Audi entered Formula One as a works team in 2026 after taking over Sauber’s operation.
Audi announced its Formula One project in 2022 and acquired full control of the Sauber group in preparation for the new technical regulations. The Swiss team had competed as Alfa Romeo and then Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber before becoming Audi’s factory entry. Audi also developed its own power unit, making the project a genuine manufacturer programme rather than a simple title sponsorship.
This history creates a common mix-up: Audi did not add a completely separate eleventh team in the way Cadillac did. Instead, it transformed the existing Sauber entry. The grid consequently gained one new works identity while retaining the same underlying competition slot.
Audi’s 2026 arrival coincides with major power-unit changes, including a much larger electrical contribution and fully sustainable fuel. Its initial drivers are Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto, pairing an experienced returnee with a young Brazilian talent.
