Bursa Malaysia adopted its current name in 2004 after previously being called the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange.
Malaysia’s organized securities-market history began with the Malayan Stock Exchange in 1960. After the separation of Singapore and Malaysia’s market arrangements, the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange was established in 1976. It later demutualized and became Bursa Malaysia in 2004.
Bursa Malaysia operates the country’s main equities market and provides trading and market services for securities and derivatives. Its principal equity benchmark is the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI, commonly known as the KLCI.
The name “Bursa” comes from the Malay word associated with an exchange and also reflects the institution’s corporate rebranding. It should not be confused with Bursa Indonesia, the former name of Indonesia’s exchange, which was later renamed the Indonesia Stock Exchange.
