Which Indian stock exchange, founded in 1875 as the Native Share and Stock Brokers’ Association, is now called BSE?

The story behind the answer

The Bombay Stock Exchange, now called BSE, was founded in 1875 as the Native Share and Stock Brokers’ Association.

It began with a group of brokers meeting under banyan trees near Mumbai’s Town Hall. The exchange later moved to several locations before establishing its well-known presence in the city’s financial district.

BSE is commonly called the Bombay Stock Exchange because Mumbai was known as Bombay when it was founded. Its official corporate name is BSE Ltd., and it operates one of India’s major securities markets.

A related milestone is the S&P BSE Sensex, introduced in 1986. The index tracks 30 large companies listed on BSE and is one of India’s best-known market indicators.
