Which major championship is played on the same course every year?

The story behind the answer

The Masters is the major championship played on the same course every year: Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. Unlike the PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and Open Championship, which rotate among host venues, the Masters remains at its permanent home.

The tournament was created by amateur champion Bobby Jones and investment banker Clifford Roberts. They developed Augusta National on the site of a former plant nursery, with Jones and architect Alister MacKenzie designing the course. The first tournament was played in 1934 under the name Augusta National Invitation Tournament; it officially became the Masters Tournament in 1939.

Augusta National is known for its dramatic elevation changes, fast putting surfaces, flowering landscape, and famous holes such as the par-three 12th, Golden Bell, and par-five 13th, Azalea. The course has changed over time through lengthening and redesign, but it remains the same host venue. The 2020 Masters was an unusual scheduling exception: it was played in November because of the COVID-19 pandemic, not at a different course.
