Which luxury automaker did Ford acquire in 1922?

Ford acquired Lincoln Motor Company in 1922. Henry Ford purchased the financially troubled luxury-car manufacturer for about $8 million, bringing the Lincoln brand into Ford’s corporate portfolio.

Lincoln had been founded in 1917 by Henry M. Leland and Wilfred Leland. Henry Leland had earlier helped establish Cadillac, and Lincoln initially produced aircraft engines during the First World War before entering automobile production.

The acquisition gave Ford a luxury marque to complement its mass-market vehicles. Lincoln continued as a distinct brand, producing automobiles positioned above Ford models in price, equipment, and prestige.

Lincoln later became especially associated with American luxury sedans, presidential limousines, and vehicles such as the Continental. Ford also created Mercury in 1938 as an intermediate brand, but Mercury was not the company acquired in 1922. Lincoln remains part of Ford’s brand history.
