Which Lou Reed album did David Bowie co-produce in 1972?

The story behind the answer

The Lou Reed album David Bowie co-produced in 1972 was Transformer.

Released by RCA Victor on November 8, 1972, Transformer was Reed’s second solo studio album after leaving the Velvet Underground. Bowie and his Spiders from Mars collaborator Mick Ronson produced the record, with Ronson also arranging strings and playing several instruments.

The album broadened Reed’s audience dramatically. Its best-known song, “Walk on the Wild Side,” became an enduring hit, while “Perfect Day,” “Satellite of Love” and “Vicious” helped establish the album as a landmark of glam rock. Bowie’s involvement was especially significant because he had long admired the Velvet Underground and used his growing fame to help champion Reed.

A common mix-up is Berlin, another celebrated Reed album. Berlin followed Transformer in 1973, but it was produced by Bob Ezrin, not Bowie. Sally Can't Dance and Coney Island Baby were also later Reed releases.
