David Bowie’s family moved to the London suburb of Bromley when he was six.
Born David Robert Jones in Brixton on January 8, 1947, Bowie spent his earliest childhood in south London. In 1953, his family moved to the Bromley area, first living in Bickley and Bromley Common before settling in Sundridge Park. He attended Burnt Ash Junior School and later Bromley Technical High School.
Bromley became an important setting in Bowie’s formative years. There he developed friendships with future collaborators and fellow musicians, including George Underwood, whose later fight with Bowie left the singer with his permanently distinctive unequal pupils. Bowie also studied art at Bromley Technical High School and began exploring music, performance and visual style.
The answer is sometimes blurred by references to Bickley, Beckenham or Sundridge Park, all places associated with his years in and around Bromley. Hackney, Greenwich and Croydon were not the family’s relocation destination described in this biography.
