Which London exchange traces its modern organization to the 1801 formation of the London Stock Exchange?
Answer
London Stock Exchange
Answer
London Stock Exchange
The London Stock Exchange traces its modern organization to the 1801 formation of the London Stock Exchange.
London’s securities market developed from informal coffee-house trading in the late 17th century, especially at Jonathan’s Coffee-House. Brokers later formed more structured associations, leading to the official establishment of the exchange in 1801.
The exchange became a central marketplace for British and international securities. Its historic importance grew alongside Britain’s industrial expansion, overseas trade, and financial influence. In 1973, the London Stock Exchange admitted listed companies from outside the United Kingdom to its official list.
The London Stock Exchange Group was created in 2007 through the merger of the London Stock Exchange and Borsa Italiana. A common mix-up is treating the exchange and its parent company as identical: the London Stock Exchange is the marketplace, while London Stock Exchange Group is the wider corporate group.
