Google acquired the London-based artificial-intelligence company DeepMind in 2014.
DeepMind was founded in London in 2010 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman. The company became known for research combining neuroscience-inspired ideas with machine learning, especially systems that learned to play games from experience.
Google completed its acquisition of DeepMind in 2014. After Alphabet was formed in 2015, DeepMind operated within the wider Alphabet corporate group while retaining its research identity. In 2023, DeepMind was combined with Google Brain to form Google DeepMind.
DeepMind is often confused with Google Brain, but they were originally separate research organizations. Google Brain was created inside Google, whereas DeepMind began as an independent British company. Their later merger united the two groups under the Google DeepMind name.
