On what date did Google.com’s domain name get registered?

The story behind the answer

Google.com’s domain name was registered on September 15, 1997.

The registration came about a year before Google was formally incorporated as a company. At that time, Larry Page and Sergey Brin were developing a search engine at Stanford University, initially under the name BackRub.

The domain registration marked an important step in turning the research project into a public web service. Google was incorporated in California on September 4, 1998, nearly one year later.

A common mix-up is confusing the domain-registration date with the company’s incorporation date or the date Google’s search engine became widely available. These are separate milestones in Google’s early history.
