Which Lithuanian prison was used for Stranger Things season 4 filming?
Answer
Lukiškės Prison
Answer
Lukiškės Prison
Stranger Things season 4 used Lukiškės Prison in Vilnius, Lithuania, for filming. The former prison supplied the grim architecture for the Soviet prison setting connected to Hopper’s storyline.
Production began in Lithuania in February 2020, using the recently decommissioned prison and nearby locations such as Kyviškės airfield. On screen, the location represents a remote Soviet facility where Hopper is imprisoned and forced to fight Demogorgons. The setting’s heavy doors, corridors, cells, and aged institutional design helped create the season’s stark atmosphere.
The real prison is not in Russia, despite the story’s geography. Lukiškės Prison is in Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius, and the production used it to stand in for a fictional Soviet prison camp. Filming was interrupted in March 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic, then resumed later that year in Georgia and elsewhere. That distinction between filming location and fictional setting is the main source of confusion.
