Which literary group did C.S. Lewis join with J.R.R. Tolkien?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis joined J.R.R. Tolkien in the literary group known as the Inklings.

The Inklings was an informal Oxford discussion and writing circle active mainly during the 1930s and 1940s. Members met in college rooms and at Oxford pubs, especially The Eagle and Child, where they read drafts aloud and discussed literature, mythology, religion, and imaginative writing.

Lewis and Tolkien were among the group’s best-known members. Charles Williams and Owen Barfield were also important participants, while other writers and scholars attended at different times. The group was not a formal society with a fixed membership list or constitution.

The Inklings helped create an environment in which Lewis and Tolkien could test ideas and receive detailed reactions to unfinished work. The group did not write books collectively, however: The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia remained separate works by separate authors.
