Which Leo Tolstoy story, published in 1859, is known in English as Family Happiness?

The story behind the answer

Leo Tolstoy’s 1859 story known in English as Family Happiness is Family Happiness.

The work was first published in the Russian journal The Russian Messenger in 1859. It is narrated by Masha, a young woman whose relationship with the older Sergey Mikhaylych develops from companionship into marriage and domestic life.

Unlike War and Peace or Anna Karenina, Family Happiness concentrates on private emotional experience rather than national conflict or a broad social panorama. Its subject is the changing nature of romantic idealism after marriage, which gives the story its deceptively simple title.

Readers sometimes confuse it with Tolstoy’s later novella The Kreutzer Sonata, another work focused on marriage and jealousy. Family Happiness is earlier, shorter, and narrated from a woman’s perspective.
